Don’t Let the Kids Win. That’s the name of Julia Jacklin’s debut album that was released on Polyvinyl Records–the album that had everyone claiming this Aussie singer-songwriter as “the next big thing.” Her music is lovely and intense, folky and emotional, especially songs like “Pool Party” and “Elizabeth.” There’s a timidness to Julia, but at the same time she’s razor sharp. She takes the mundane and spins it into charming songs, with just a touch of nostalgia.
She’s toured all over the world (including Newport Folk Festival most recently). She’s shared the stage with some pretty major bands (like Mitski, Andy Shauf, Okkervil River). And she’s going with it. Maybe she never imagined this world for herself (especially back in the mundane factory that she worked at, where she wrote all her songs), but life is looking bright. She’s also just released a new song called “Eastwick,” which is a preview single from her upcoming record that’s due out in September.
Julia Jacklin returns to Brooklyn this November, playing at Rough Trade.
