Kristian Matsson is actually not that tall (unlike most Swedes), but luckily that has nothing to do with the measure of how well Matsson plays folk music. And once The Wild Hunt was released, with songs like “Love is All” and “King of Spain” he proved himself as one of the top singer-songwriters around. The crackle in his voice is poetic, like a modern-day Bob Dylan–full of emotion, with sincerity, with an admirable vulnerability.
His music has taken him on a world tour, including major festivals like Newport Folk and Rockilde, and he’s released three more albums since his debut, the latest called Dark Bird is Home where he continues his folky blues sound, which is also supported by a short video (see below) where fans can catch a glimpse into his world that’s full of solitude and writing and wondering about the world. It’ll make you want to listen to songs like “There’s No Leaving Now” and “Little River” (from his EP Sometimes the Blues is Just a Passing Bird) and go somewhere quiet to think about life and love and loss and sadness and everything in between that The Tallest Man on Earth even himself sings about. (It’ll also make you want to move to Sweden.)
Playing Brooklyn are the only scheduled tour dates coming up, and the one on September 21st is already sold out. Don’t wait to buy a ticket. This show will be beautiful.
