It was only just recently that the band Florist released their latest song called “What I Wanted to Hold,” reminding listeners just how long it’s been since this precious band has released something new since their last EP called The Birds Outside Sang. Their sound is so delicate, feathery and poetic, and when you listen to them you are filled with such a specific feeling that’s a unique blend of nostalgia, sadness, youth. And it didn’t take long at all for everyone to start talking about their songs and how they drove listeners to such an an emotional place. But with leading lady Emily Sprague’s innocent yet completely endearing voice, it isn’t that difficult to just let your heart go.
There’s a simplicity about Florist’s lyrics, as well, which you can hear in the song “Thank You” when she sings “The mountains around my eyes set on fire before I could even swallow my own spit. I was born a boy with many opinions. And now I’m a girl who doesn’t really care about anything.” Sprague is joined by Rick Spataro, Jonnie Baker, Felix Walworth (all now based in Brooklyn).
Their upcoming record If Blue Could be Happiness can’t come soon enough. And playing in a church seems like the most perfect venue for a band like Florist–a performance that will be an emotional journey for certain.
