Fans were ecstatic when Wolf Parade first reunited last year for the first time in over five years when they dropped their EP 4 and reunited for tour. But that was only warm-up. Now, the band is gearing up for a release of their first album since 2010’s Expo 86.
The new LP, entitled Cry Cry Cry, is set to drop on October 6 through Sub Pop/Universal Music, ans is being produced by the esteemed John Goodmanson (Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney). Expo 86was dubbed “a real rock record,” by bassist Dante De Caro, but the new LP is “more deliberate in its arrangements and embrace of the studio process.”
When talking about the recording process, Spencer Krug said that “the band itself is almost a fifth member of the band, something more or at least different than the sum of its parts…We don’t know who or what is responsible for our sound, it’s just something that naturally and consistently comes from this particular combo of musicians.”
Not to leave fans hanging, the group also dropped off the album’s lead single, “Valley Boy.” The “new” track is not new to anyone who caught Wolf Parade on tour last year, but now it has hit the horizons of the Internet for fans to ingest. The single was written following the death of Leonard Cohen, which also just happened to be days before the 2016 election, and you can read into the lyrics anyway you like: “The radio’s been playing all your songs/Talking about the way you slipped away up the stairs,” Krug wails out. “Did you know that it was all gonna go wrong?” The new track shows that the band still has it in them, and showcases their sprawling indie-rock sound.
Wolf Parade will also be at this year’s Fortress Festival.
