Today on Facebook Wilco announced tour dates for late 2017, mainly focusing on the Midwest and Southwest. The tour will begin in Nebraska towards the end of September and wrap up in North Carolina in October. Tickets will be available for sale on Wednesday, July 19 at 10 AM local time. In addition to playing several theaters and auditoriums, the band will take their iconic and defining alt-country sound to the Trans-Pecos Festival of Music + Love in the small art-centered Central Texas town of Marfa. The band has spent much of 2017 on the road with a current summer tour stretching until early August and a winter 2017 tour that included four straight appearances at New York City’s Beacon Theater and four more straight dates at the famous Chicago Theater.
The band is riding high off of the release of yet another stellar album, 2016’s Schmilco. The band grew its substantial underground fanbase by practically defining the alternative country genre, and some of those elements could be found on their latest release. However, the album also dove heavily into off-kilter singer-songwriter pop la Henry Nilsson or Randy Newman. The stylistic excursion was a great success, landing the album solidly within our “Best Albums of 2016” list.
At their own Solid Sound Festival, which was held in North Adams, MA, the band allowed fans to select full album, which they performed in its entirety during their headlining set. The result was a set of two of their most seminal releases, Being There and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. According to NYC Taper, the band concluded their set of Being There, left the stage and returned to play the first song from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot – and then just kept playing until they had covered the entirety of that break-out album.
In related Wilco news, member Nels Cline recently recorded and released an album with the legendary Mike Watt of The Minutemen and fIREHOSE, Greg Saunier of Deerhoof and Nick Reinhart of Teras Malos, titled Big Walnuts Yonder.
