There’s no doubt that Kesha has absolutely triumphed through her setbacks this year. The pop singer has had a legal battle play out in the media after alleging that her producer Dr. Luke sexually assaulted and abused her. After an incredibly powerful and inspiring new single “Praying,” Kesha strikes again with a new track.
If “Praying” was Kesha spouting out her demons, then the new track “Woman” is Kesha standing her ground and declaring to the world who she is, and that is “a motherf***in woman.” The new track opens with a faux-country diddly until Kesha tells the track to shut up. What follows is the singer declaring her independence (“I say what I say, I do what I want….I don’t need a man to be holdin me tight”) from anyone who might take advantage or attempt to control the fierce singer. The track is a joyful and groovy anthem (with some help on the horns from The Dap-Kings) for woman and feminists, and Kesha looks to be back in full form on the new single.
Kesha opened up about the writing behind the track, and how significant was to her. To Kesha, the track is just about how she “really f***ing loves being a woman and I wanted an anthem for anyone else who wants to yell about being self-sufficient and strong…(Yes, men, this song can be for you too.)”
The track itself was actually written by two men, Drew Pearson and Stephen Wrabel, while in a session with Kesha. Despite not actually writing the song, Kesha claimed the session was one of the best she’s ever been in. “It was such a beautiful experience to write such a strong female empowerment song with two men…because it reinforces how supportive men can be of women AND feminism.”
The new track is part of upcoming Rainbow album, her first in over five years, along with the other single “Praying” and two tracks with help from Eagles of Death Metal. Watch the new video below and stay tuned for the album drop on August 11.
