With Warped Tour in full swing, it’s only fitting that GWAR, the masters of campy gore, take their particular brand of energy to other outfits as well. At one show, fans were treated to the pairing of GWAR’s bassist Beefcake the Mighty and post-hardcore veterans Silverstein on July 7.
Before Silverstein decided to go into their new single “Ghost” from their upcoming 8th record Dead Reflection, Beefcake, in full kilt-wearing, spike-helmet glory, walked up onto stage. At this point, Silverstein frontman Shane Told simply informed the crowd “He’s here to kill Bill.”
At this point, poor Billy Hamilton was charged with a sword and then had his throat slit. Beefcake then nonchalantly quipped “I heard you’re looking for a new bass player.”
Unfazed by the atrocity happening at the side of the stage, Silverstein ripped into their new song with Beefcake taking one half of the rhythm section. Two of GWAR’s Slave Pit crew members, clad in masks and loincloths, continued to beat on the fallen bass player with swords before making their way offstage.
It’s been an exciting Warped Tour for other reasons too, especially for GWAR. The band has been offering their fans a preview of their upcoming record, The Blood of Gods, performing lead single “Fuck This Place” at every stop. It’s the first new piece of original material from the group since the passing of frontman Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus) in 2014.
