Hardcore vets Jonah Matranga (Far, New End Original, onelinedrawing, Gratitude) and J Robbins (Jawbox, Government Issue, Burning Airlines, Office of Future Plans) recently joined forces to form a new band called Camorra. With Zach Barocas (Jawbox and BELLS) making the group a trio, the band has their debut EP Mourning, Resistance, Celebration comes out next week on July 14.
Ahead of the release, the group premiered a new video to give fans a teaser for what to expect on the new EP. The video is for the new track “Love & Economics,” Matranga said that the new video was “a student project” that he found on the Internet. “I was instantly interested when I noticed it’s pretty much the exact length of the tune, so I just combined the simple lyric video that I was gonna do with what Kali did. The symmetry is pretty crazy, right?” For Matranga, the video was a perfect match. “There is zero editing or any other attempt to make the song match her piece, it just worked out.”
The video itself is a student project on colonialism and the brutal effects it had, depicting images of the slave trade as well as the displacement of local tribes in areas that are mined for oil and other natural resources.
As for the new track, is not quite the “hardcore” sound fans would expect from the two’s discography. There are loud, open and splashy drums and some heavily down-tuned strings, but the vocals are at times softer and more solemn, matching several of the themes of sorrow and loss depicted in the video. Overall, the track is a far cry from the EP’s lead single “Roosevelt Champion III.”
In addition to the two released tracks, the EP will also host a duet with Janet Morgan on a track entitled “Parting Friends,” as well as “Black White Girl Boy” by Tierney Tough (The Pauses), Brooks Harlan and Shawna Potter (War On Women). Check out the new video below.
