There really is nothing better than summer in the city. And when that includes Brooklyn and a free show, that’s literally the best news around. Japanese Breakfast has a pretty busy July coming up in New York, as the band is opening up for (Sandy) Alex G. who is playing two sold-out shows, but JP is coming to hang over in BK mid-month, keeping it chill and easy at Union Pool.
Japanese Breakfast is the solo project of singer Michelle Zauner of the indie band Little Big League. She left the band after returning home because of her mother’s death and used music as a form of relief from that horrible pain. Her debut record under her solo moniker was released just last year called Psychopomp–an album that catapulted her into the world of experimental indie-pop, and since then the momentum hasn’t stopped. Music brought light to her life again, as she poured herself into her songs and regained her strength the only way she knew how. She thought for a while that she might even quit music, but when her album started getting rave reviews by her fans, of course she thought again.
The music of Japanese Breakfast is energetic and pulsing, which you can hear on songs like “In Heaven” and “Everybody Wants to Love You.” But the other half of the album is mysteriously layered, thick with emotion and captivating, which you can hear on songs like “Psychopomp” and “Moon on the Bath.” But whichever vibe Japanese Breakfast decides to take the show, even if a creative mix of her moods, there’s no doubt that this performance at Union Pool will be captivating, will interrupt you, and will make you crave more of where her latest single “Boyish” came from.
