Hercules & Love Affair, the dance music project created by DJ and producer, Andy Butler, has released a new song titled “Omnion” off their upcoming album. The new album is set to be released on September 1st and will be the fourth studio album by Hercules & Love Affair. The new track, which premiered Tuesday is a nice example of what’s to come for Butler and his project.
“Omnion” features vocals from Sharon Van Etten and doesn’t sound like a song that one would hear on the dance floor. The sound is a little more tame and has the same kind of feel that one would hear as a centerpiece in a indie film. Etten expressed that the song is about, “Coming to terms with identity and finding community…(in my mind). It’s a very important time to share in that sentiment.” Butler goes further and says that; “Sometimes songs are born out of an intense moment that has nothing to do with club music.”
The song has already seen some popularity in the music scene with new remixes from Joe Goddard and British electronic pioneers Ultramarine.
Recently, Butler was in the throes of a brutal drug addiction which sent him to the hospital every weekend. His relationship with drugs and clubs had followed him since his youth but these past four years has him clean. With the release of “Omnion,” it is his re-immersion in the world and shows both the ugliness and beauty that it can provide.
Raised in Denver, Colorado, Butler as a teenager had escaped to New York where he created Hercules & Love Affair as an outlet for his songs. His career has brought the dance floor to those listening at home. “Omnion” reflects his current “hypersensitivity to things going on…personally and in the world.”
Butler explains; “Sometimes the dance floor represents a decision to avoid dialogue with the wider world, to commune with people but not really talk. But, humans need to challenge themselves and step it up.”
The new album also features two songs with vocals from Faris Badwan of The Horrors including “Controller.” The video to the song was directed by Rei Nadal and according V Magazine follows “the Hercules & Love Affair tradition of lavish visuals…equal parts creepy and fabulous.”
“A Feast for the Eyes” is Hercules’s spectacular new stage show and is being taken to venues and festivals throughout the summer. An autumn headline tour will be announced soon.
