Donald Glover Says Next Childish Gambino Album Will Be His Last

Donald Glover has announced, to the crowd at the Governors Ball Music Festival, that his next Child Gambino may be his last. He hinted the audience at the festival by saying “You’re in my heart, I’ll see you for the last Gambino album.”

According to Pitchfork, the artist told HuffPost that he no longer finds Childish Gambino music “necessary” due to the idea of repetition and a lack of reason to come back. He states “There’s nothing worst than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’, you know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that. Like I feel like there’s gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk.” Glover continued, “Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at ‘Atlanta’ as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn’t be punk anymore. As much as ‘Redbone’ is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like there’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.”

The artist has released three albums, including last year’s Awaken, My Love!, under the name Childish Gambino. Along with the studio albums, the artist has also released seven mixtapes and two EPs.

In an interview the artist on the Today show back in 2015, the artist had told the interviewers that he had always seen Childish Gambino as something that would come to an end. He said “I guess Childish Gambino is a period of my art time. I want to have periods in my life. I feel like Childish Gambino is a period that should come to a close. I like endings.”
