Gorillaz first album in an enternity Humanz, has only been out for a few short weeks, but it’s already inserted itself into “Album of the Year” conversations and will likely remain there for the foreseeable future. If you remember, Damon Albarn mentioned that he had somewhere around 40-45 extra songs that didn’t make the cut. “I can stay in the game for at least another 18 months, I reckon,” he mentioned to Zane Lowe.
Apparently Albarn wanted to make good on his word and wasn’t satisfied with his already huge musical offering this year. Today, Gorillaz released a new song and video entitled “Sleeping Powder,” one of the unreleased songs he mentioned. The track, coming in after the notorious “this is your brain on drugs,” commercial, starts with an acoustic guitar and harpsichord but quickly gives way to a funky synth groove, all while the Gorillaz lead singer is feeling himself with some dance moves. The video is a trip, and could easily be confused with something you’d see on [adult swim] at 4 in the morning.
While the track’s only home is on YouTube as of now, moves like this give hope to the idea of a B-Sides release down the road. Check out the trippy visuals below and get ready to dance. If that’s not enough Gorillaz will be out in full force this summer at several festivals.
