Rising alternative folk singer Kevin Morby has released a new video for the single “City Music,” taken from the album of the same title. Opening with a woman’s spoken word passage that recalled time past with visual backing of photographs that feature Morby and presumably the woman who is narrating (played by Tipper Newton). The video transitions into live-action, with the narrator describing hearing electric music that was unlike anything she had heard in the country. It was “city music.”
At seven minutes in length, the song traverses several passages though almost always settles back down into a simple guitar-led groove. The video shows a band playing in a small club (later revealed to be in Las Vegas). In between ice cream breaks, various actors and musicians playing the part of lead singer. First it is Morby, then Brazilian singer-songwriter Rodrigo Amarante and several others like King Tuff and Matt from Matt & Kim.

City Music is out next Friday (6/16) on Dead Oceans, and follows up his excellent album from last year, Singing Saw. While you wait for that album to drop, check out Morby performing with Katie Crutchfield (aka Waxahatchee) as the two cover Everclear’s seminal 90s hit “Santa Monica.”
