It all started with Pink Strat, the debut album from the Canadian singer-songwriter Afie Jurvanen who goes by the band name Bahamas that first introduced his breezy, beachy, and sometimes as slow-as-a-music-box sound to the world. Songs like “Hockey Teeth” and “Sunshine Blues” are prime tunes from the album–an album that has a surfer-with-a-suntan vibe, which led Bahamas to open for some pretty big names like Jack Johnson, The Lumineers and Robert Plant. In 2012 Bahamas released a second album called Barchords on Brushfire Records.
Bahamas is not a band that’s meant to energize or whip up some crazy night that you’ll be raving about for days. It’s meant to feel like sunshine, like puppy-love–a soundtrack that inspires longful gazes with saltwater in your hair. It almost doesn’t seem right that Afie Jurvanen’s music isn’t more winter-in-Ontario-like (since those are his roots)–but instead evokes an ethereal feeling that seems much better suited for (let’s just say it) some good island living.
Bahamas released a third album called Bahamas is Afie in 2014, which is his most poppy, most confident record yet (and yes, you definitely heard the song “All the Time” in a Verizon commercial). He’s come a long way since singing along with Feist (which was what he was doing before he started working solo), but playing his own songs is definitely more his thing–and so is goin’ with the flow, keepin’ things easy, and playin’ some sweet shows with sweet vibes.
