Hey, Descendents! It’s been way too long. What have you been doing for the past twelve years?! (But let’s rewind for a second and go back to the beginning to where it all started.)
Hailing from California in 1977, the Descendents have proven themselves to be one of the top skate-punk bands around, not just creating a sound all their own but also also influencing other artists in the genre who’ve come after them, like Blink 182, Green Day, The Bouncing Souls. When the group first started making music they basically did it because they just wanted to. They wanted to have fun. And for ten years after that they continued making pure garage fucked-up youth anthems until they called it quits in 1987 to pursue other things in life. But the break didn’t last forever. It couldn’t, right? They released Everything Sucks in 1996, followed by Cool to be You in 2004, and just last year they released Hypercaffium Spazzinate on Epitaph Records.
The Descendents have proven that it’s never too late to keep doing what you love in life. And in 2013 the band released a documentary called Filmage (watch the trailer on You Tube here), which tells the whole glorious, sweaty, moshy and passionate story of the Descendents, how they made it so big and how punk-rock was always the band’s truest passion (even when Milo Aukerman put down the mic to go become a scientist). But their passion was again realized, even though they’re middle-aged men now, proving that when it comes to punk, to music in general, to letting go and getting as dirty as possible on stage (especially when playing songs like “Suburban Home” and “I’m Not a Punk”) that it’s never, ever too late to not give a shit about anything but what fills you the most.
