Naomi Punk Share Single “Chains” and Announce New Double Album Yellow for August 2017 Release

Abrasive, grungy noise band Naomi Punk are back with their latest album, which will be released on August 4, 2017. The double album, the first in the Olympia, WA-based band’s history, is titled Yellow and will be released on Captured Tracks. Among its 25-song track list, two songs have been released so far. The first, “Chains,” is a dirge-y, slow-burning new song.

The second song to be released from the album is “Tiger Pipe.” Yet another slow song from a band that does pick up the tempo from time to time, this one features an experimental atmosphere. It begins with a single distorted guitar guiding the action for a minute and a half before the murky, affected vocals kick in, and just went it starts to reach an anthemic peak, it meanders back into guitar noise.

The songs on the album were recorded between 2015 and 2017, a steady process that has resulted in such a magnum opus. Not only is the length of the album ambitious, but the themes behind it are as well. The band explains that the material comes from the “Scorpion Suite” (now the album artwork makes more sense) – this is a state of mind only “alternative” members of the band are able to enter. This alternative Naomi Punk is called, logically, The Scorpions and the members “performed their predetermined roll in a project half-aspiring to the register of licensing music, half-aspiring to musical novelty.” Whatever that means is open to interpretation.
