For those of you a touch unfamiliar with The House of Vans motto, it is described as being the place where “off the wall” lives. With locations in Brooklyn, Chicago, and London, House of Vans brings people together to celebrate art and creativity with workshops, installations and awesome live shows.
On May 18 in Brooklyn, Digable Planets will be forming. They are an alternative hip-hop group that first started back in the 80s. The three members of the band go by the names “Butterfly,” “Doodlebug” and “Ladybug Mecca,” so you know they like to have fun with their music and never take themselves too seriously. Their shared passion for jazz, poetry and street culture is what initially brought the trio together, to begin exploring their funky, jazzy-rap sound, but they haven’t been playing music together consistently since their start (even though a Grammy win for Best Rap Performance should have solidified their hopeful futures in music). They went their separate ways in the mid-90s after their second album Blowout Comb was released, played a couple of reunion shows after that, and then skated around the idea of staying together.
But, just four years ago, Light in the Attic Records reached out to the group to suggest a re-release of their second album, even though their top single “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like That)” was featured on their premiere record Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space). And now Digable Planets are back on tour again–for who knows how long–so catch this show while its hot at House of Vans in Greenpoint.
