All the Prince fans out there (everybody) should be excited to learn that the tracklists for his Purple Rain reissues have been unveiled and will include brand new music that has never been released before. A remastered version of the historic album, Purple Rain, is set to be released on June 23rd in two forms, Deluxe and Deluxe – Expanded Edition. NPG Records and Warner Brothers, who are behind the two remastered releases of the 1984 album, claim that Prince himself oversaw the remastering process in 2015. They also state that the two-disc Purple Rain Deluxe set will feature six tracks that have “never been released or distributed in the collector or bootleg community.”
Prince passed away on April 21, 2016 and left behind a stash of unreleased music at his Paisley Park Estate. Among that unreleased music is a studio version of Prince’s “Electric Intercourse,” which wasn’t known to have existed and is one of the unreleased tracks on the remastered album coming this summer. The six tracks also include a 1983 solo version of “Possessed” and a 10 minute long version of “We Can Fuck” with lyrics specific to the recording included in the set. There is another 5 minute plus version of “Father’s Song,” which has only been previously heard as a snippet in his film Purple Rain. Another song included is a finished master of “Katrina’s Paper Dolls,” which previously circulated in demo form only.
The Purple Rain Deluxe set includes the 2015 Paisley Park remasters of the original music from the soundtrack along with a second disk titled, From the Vault & Unreleased. The second disc includes 11 songs that were discovered in Prince’s secret vault, including “Electric Intercourse,” 1984’s “Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden” and the 1983 instrumental “Father’s Song.”
The Purple Rain Deluxe – Expanded Edition has the two Deluxe discs as well as a third disk, Single Edits and B-Sides, and a concert DVD. The concert audio and video that was restored for the Expanded Edition is from Prince and the Revolution Live at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY, March 30, 1985.
It has been difficult to find Prince’s work online since Prince pulled all his music from almost all streaming sites in order to have control over his own music distribution. These new remastered releases of his most famous album are a must have for fans that have been craving access to Prince’s music.
