Dr. Octagon the extraterrestrial surgeon from Jupiter also known as Kool Keith, just dropped previously unreleased track from 1996 titled “Redeye.” The track is everything you would expect from the rap master; it has futuristic beats and relentless flow.
The song is beautiful mess of Kool Keith’s masterful rap rambling, Qberts turntable cuts and Automators strange si-fi production. The song is the epitome of what the group did best; coming from the groups highest creative point debuting the raw naivety of yet to be mastered potential. This very sound they developed completely paved the way for the underground hip-hop movement, forging a path that gave way to alternatives for decades to come.
Automator spoke to Rolling Stone about the track and why it wasn’t on the original projects they produced saying, “Well, the reason it wasn’t on the album was because I think it brought down the futuristic level. But what was cool about it was the chaos. I equate that one with Airplane! The movie. I don’t know why.”
In the mid 90s when Dr. Octagon was creating concepts and lyrics for the concept E.P. Doctor Octagons Debut, Automator was producing the beats and had just recently approached Qberts for help with cuts, which would cement their signature sound.
