It’s been known for some time that legendary sludge rockers Melvins are working on new music, and today it is official: the Washington State band will release their first-ever double album this summer. Titled A Walk With Love and Death, the album will be out on July 7 via Ipecac Records. Turns out previous prognostications were correct and the two CD-Rs that were posted by producer Toshi Kasai were in fact a new double-album by the seminal rockers.

The release is actually a pair of albums put together, the first, Death, is a proper Melvins release. Meanwhile, the second half Love is a score to a short film called A Walk With Love and Death, which was produced and directed by Jesse Nieminen.

The band posted the following trailer for the short films on their Facebook page:

Drummer Dale Crover (who also might be announcing his own solo album soon) explained about the double album, “A Walk With Love and Death is one giant, dark, moody, psychotic head trip! Not for the faint of heart. You’ll sleep with the lights on after listening.” Judging from the creepy trailer above, that is no joke on his part.

Iconic frontman Buzz Osborne had this to say about the entire project: “This was a huge undertaking. All three things: the album, the soundtrack and the film are benchmarks for us.”

The album will include several well-known guests. These appearances include Joey Santiago, guitarist for Pixies, Teri Gender Bender, the frontwoman of Le Butcherettes and collaborator with Osborne and Crover in Crystal Fairy and Anna Waronker of That Dog.

The Facebook post also notes that the band will be headed out on a North American tour soon, so keep your eyes peeled for more dates from these noise rock legends as the build-up to the first double album in their illustrious career is prepped for release. Pre-orders for A Walk With Love and Death will be announced soon, and it will be released as a double-CD, on vinyl and of course, digitally.
