Rodrigo y Gabriela (Tenth Anniversary Tour) @ Brooklyn Steel 6/8

When Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero first met in Mexico City, it was all about the music and their shared love for it (especially metal, believe it or not). But when the duo decided to start making music together, they realized that the city didn’t have the energy and exact following that they both craved. So they relocated to Dublin to embrace the music culture there, and to explore their zesty approach to playing guitar that infuses influences of folk, flamenco and rock. They started playing shows–cover songs mostly–before incorporating some original tunes into the mix. And soon, after the release of their second album, they were # 1 on the Irish charts, beating The Arctic Monkeys and Johnny Cash for the top spot.

Rodrigo y Gabriela have toured extensively since then, sold out shows all over the world, sold over a million records, and released a series of live albums that showcase the band’s impressive sound that’s soulful and sexy, full of spirit and passion. Their tracks are exciting and mysterious (imagine the soundtrack of a European cafe table meeting a Mexican fiesta) which just goes to show how much you can do with a pair of acoustic guitars, a wild imagination and two pairs of solid hands–especially on tracks like “Tamacún” and “Diablo Rojo.”

The acoustic pair will be celebrating the ten year anniversary of their self-titled album, and although they are busy writing and recording songs for their latest release, looking back to the early days playing music in Ireland is just as important as what’s next to come.
