The topic of climate change and its environmental impacts has been at the forefront of many citizens twenty-first century concerns, except for the president of the United States. In response, French electronic music artist Jean Michel-Jerre has decided to take matters into his own hands and bring awareness to this issue by putting on a performance at the Dead Sea on Thursday, April 6. This site has always been a point of interest to scientists, as it’s the place with the lowest elevation on earth and also contains the highest salt content. Recently however, the salty sea has been an area of climate change study since it’s slowly been drying up at a rate of three feet per year. If it were to continue at the same speed, the Dead Sea will be officially gone by the year 2050.
Michel-Jerre will bring awareness to the pressing matter of climate change while audiences are surrounded by the encompassing views that the Dead Sea provides. There will only be 10,000 tickets available, starting at $128 and ending around $767.
“For me, the whole point of this project is to make people aware of the urgency of dealing with the Earth as a whole,” Jarre said in an interview about the event. “The concert will contribute to, I hope, organising the resistance against all the Trumps of the world.”
The concert will take place in front of the ancient Masada site in Israel, surrounded by the Dead Sea. Footage from the show will be made into a film and sent out for release.
“This region belongs to humanity,” Jarre continued. “It involves all of us from a human point of view. We must do our utmost to preserve this place.”
This January Jean Michel-Jarre announced dates for his upcoming spring 2017 tour, his first time ever coming to North America. Recently, he dropped music video for “exit” featuring Edward Snowden that you can watch here.
