Lil Peep @ Subterranean (4/9)

American recording artist Lil Peep will be at Wicker Park’s Subterranean April 9th.  The emo artist just released his mixtape Castles II in February.

Born Gustav Ahr, Lil Peep started recording his own songs and posting them to YouTube and SoundCloud.  After obtaining a substantial following, he left his home-state of New York to live in LA and pursue his dream further.  The tattooed 20 year old has had a bit of a rough time growing up and works through his destructive feelings with his music.  Touching on subjects such as suicide, drug use and ex-girlfriends, Lil Peep’s music is raw and emotional with a hint of rap and rock which has given way to it being called “new emo” or “emo trap” music.  He also thrives on the thought of revenge which drives his will to succeed.  Lil Peep has spoken openly about his struggles with depression and says that his music and drugs are his own medicine/therapy.

The wild punk lifestyle with face tattoos and ever-changing hair color could just be an act he has created for the music industry.  As he says, “It’s like professional wrestling—everyone has to be a character,” says Peep. “If you’re not a fun enough character, then no one’s gonna fuck with you because you don’t have enough shit that’s different.”  Subterranean seems like to perfect venue for this young man to yell about his frustration, do some drugs and then sing about it rather than get help.
