2017 is feeling some type of way with the slew of new music being announced. First Gorillaz, then Kendrick Lamar, and now, Dan Auerbach has officially announced his second solo album, Waiting on a Song.
We’ve already talked about how the Black Keys’ frontman has recruited a slew of Nashville heavyweights in his “love letter to Nashville,” and the album will finally grace fans’ headphones on June 2.
Auerbach recruited some of Nashville’s most respected artists to contribute the project, including John Prime, Duane Eddy, Jerry Douglas, Pat McLaughlin, as well as Bobby Wood and Gene Chrisman of the Memphis Boys.
Nashville has always held a special place in Auerbach’s heart musically, but his recent experiences living there since 2010 have profoundly shaped him as an artist.
“Living in Nashville has definitely changed the way I think about music and the way that I record it. I didn’t have all these resources before. I am working with some of the greatest musicians that ever lived.”
Recording with such legendary musicians gave Auerbach a new focus as well.
“They’d come over, and we’d be in a little room in my house with the door closed, and we’d just write. Monday through Wednesday we’d write, then Thursday through Sunday we’d record, every week.”
In addition to the new announcement, the album’s first single was premiered on NPR this week, and it does not disappoint. “Shine on Me,” the Mark Knopflier-assisted track features an upbeat and driving guitar riff as Auerbach’s foggy vocals gently ride on top of the head-nodding track.
The new album also marks the debut of Auerbach’s very own record label, Easy Eye sound, which will feature soon-to-be-announced releases from other artists.
