Last month’s Best British Male NME Award nominee, Michael Kiwanuka, has released a video to accompany his new single “Cold Little Heart,” that stars Lakeith “Keith” Stanfield as its lead role. The video can be streamed below via YouTube.
The video was directed by David Helman, who saw the star to be just as important as Kiwanuka‘s music itself. Stanfield is most known for his roles in the current thriller Get Out and in Donald Glover’s highly successful FX series, Atlanta. In a press release Helman had this to say about his choice in casting:
,
Since the narrative is rooted in grief and centres around the loss of a father figure from the perspective of a young teenager, I knew we needed to cast someone who would immediately connect with our audience on an emotional level. Lakeith has been a close friend who has continued to inspire me with both his talent, but also with his genuine curiosity. You can easily spend hours talking to Lakeith about almost anything and expand your perspective on everything from religion to Death Grips. I wrote this concept with Lakeith in mind from the start because every time we’ve worked together he’s always willing to make himself vulnerable and he’s absolutely fearless in front of the camera.
This particular track was also used in the opening credits of HBO’s Big Little Lies, seen below.
“Cold Little Heart” is off of Kiwanuka‘s multiple award nominated second album Love & Hate. As the album’s opening track, it does a fantastic job of setting the tone for the entire soulfully crafted work of art. The album was nominated for the Hyundai Mercury Prize and Album of the Year at the BRIT Awards.
Kiwanuka is returning to the United States this May for what is said to be his biggest headline shows to date. That includes a sold out show in Los Angeles at the famed Fonda Theatre and an appearance at this year’s Bonnaroo Arts and Music Festival.
