Kanye West Settles Copyright Infringement Case Over “New Slaves” Sample

The more success, the more headaches that an artist must deal with when it comes to dealing with the business aspect of their art. For many artists, the business aspect is what makes them want to stop making music or vent their frustrations on social media to their large amounts of followers they have on each platform. In this case, Kanye West is in the headlines as a lawsuit over a used sampled has just been settled for a reported 2.5 million dollars.

According to STEREOGUM, a Hungarian musician by the name of Gabor Presse sued for 2.5 million dollars over the usage of the song “Gyöngyhajú lány” in West’s song “New Slaves”, which was featured on his 2013 album Yeezus. In the lawsuit, it is alleged that Kanye’s team had reached out to Presser for permission to use the sample under the condition that on a later date a deal would be made to compensate Presser for the use of his music. Allegedly, West sent over a check for $10,000 to Presser, which he never cashed, and the deal never became official. Terms of the lawsuit have noit been disclosed but, Presser’s lawyer had this to say, “One of his lawyers reportedly said “the matter has been resolved amicably”.

From the beninning of his career to now, Kanye West has been known for his style of sampling and creating something new with the original. This is not the first or is it probably the last time he will have issues with the business side of music.
