Sometimes you just don’t need a drummer. And sometimes, when it comes to making music with a such a saturated sound, you don’t need to play more than a couple of chords on a guitar and you don’t need any other instruments, either. That’s what Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad of the Philly band Girlpool are all about–playing guitar and singing and delivering songs that will surprise you by how big they are.
Their DIY sound is in your face. Their lyrics are literal. Their voices are exemplary of two badass chicks who just love to rock out. They’ll whine and they’ll sing a bunch of angsty blah, blah, blah’s and they’ll scream and they’ll sing lyrics like “Sometimes I want to be a boy” and “Do you want to makeout? I heard you had a slutmouth” as heard on “Slutmouth” off their self-titled EP. There music is super indie but bubbly, empowered. If there was a dry-humored coming-of-age flick out there right now that’s unafraid to be uncomfortably raw, then their music would for sure be its soundtrack.
In 2015 Girlpool released Before the World Was Big–an album that mixes up their initial vibe by introducing some slower tracks like “Nora” and “Chinatown” and overall delivers a more polished identity to their uneven, quirky punk flavor. And it’s been well-noticed. They’ve opened for Jenny Lewis. They’ve played Coachella, SXSW, and they’ve toured the world. Their upcoming album will be released this May called Powerplant, and their single “123” has already been released. And yes, the song is bigger than big (and even more so now with the added drums).
