One of the Nameless Ghouls from Ghost has revealed a bit of information that gives a better look into the mythology of one of metal’s most exciting acts, Ghost. There have been rumors floating around since the band’s formation in 2008 regarding who the people behind the masks really are. While the Nameless Ghoul does not provide any insight into the identities of the other Ghouls and current leader Papa Emeritus IV. According to Loudwire, in the interview with Merkur the Ghoul reveals that since 2008 the group has changed their lineup a total of 10 times.
With the exception of Banksy, the prospects of an artist remaining anonymous in the wake of critical acclaim and increased popularity is nearly impossible. As Ghost has climbed near the top of the metal throne, cracks in their veil have begun to show. In September of 2016, publications began to realize that the bassist of Ghost is clearly female, which was a new development from the previously (presumed) all-male lineup.
Just over a week ago, the first Nameless Ghoul was identified publicly as Martin Persner. In the video, Persner explains he has been a member of the band for seven years as a Nameless Ghoul, or Omega, or Quintessence. He left the group in July of 2016 and will be devoting himself to his previous group, the Magna Carta Cartel (or MCC).
The Ghoul explains in the interview that part of the reason for the high rate of turnover within Ghost is the requirement of anonymity band members must undertake. According to the band member, the lack of being recognized for their work has led some of the members to part ways with the band. However, this particular Ghoul sees no problem with the veiled arrangement; “I’ve created the whole project. I’ve been working for six years, composing, designing stage shows, giving interviews. I feel recognized. This is more difficult for others.” Members of Ghost are simply referred to by the elements – Fire, Water, Wind, Earth and Ether.
According to Loudwire, the band is working on their fourth album Drenched in Death, which is expected to be released in August of 2017. As has been the case with each new full length, this new Ghost LP will feature a new Papa – Papa Emeritus IV is rumored to have taken over for Papa Emeritus III, the leader of Meliora, the band’s last LP. Papa III took over for Papa Emeritus II, who took over for the original Papa Emeritus. It’s believed that all four of the Papas are the same musician, so these three leadership changes are likely not part of the 10 lineup changes the Nameless Ghoul is referring to.
