It’s been a long time since Envy on the Coast was talked about in the present tense. They used to be a band from Long Island who released two albums in their music career called Lucy Gray in 2007 and LOWCOUNTRY in 2010. But the band didn’t last, which for their post-hardcore following was a frustrating twist of events. They played three farewell shows, and just like that Envy on the Coast was over.
But that was back in 2010. And now (actually starting last year in 2016), Ryan Hunter and Brian Byrne are back–not necessarily for a “reunion” tour, but to create something new that will resonate with loyal fans and will reignite the band’s passion for music, minus all the trivial bandmate bullsh*t that dissolved the group in the first place. (Hunter and Byrne are the only two of the original five members of the band who are back to playing music together again.)
It’s been a positive return so far, especially with the ten-year anniversary of their debut album that was released on Photo Finish Records, with hit songs being “Sugar Skulls” and “The Gift of Paralysis.” And it’s an anniversary that’s intended to be celebrated–just with a new energy and a rediscovered appreciation for the band in general, not just for where they’ve been, but for where they are going as well.
