Lorde is back with a new single, titled “Green Light.” It is the first taste of new music from the young pop prodigy since she released a song for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, “Yellow Flicker Beat” a couple years ago in 2014. The build-up for the new track has been fairly substantial, with teasers . She then verified the time the song will debut with a Tweet:
The announcement follows a “treasure hunt” led by Lorde – she tweeted out a trio of locations in Auckland, New Zealand which led some fans to Herne Bay Beach, where the sand was lit up green and with lyrics displayed on a lightbox. Others in the center of town were treated to a white car with a flashing green interior and the projection of the words “Green Light” on the town hall.
A 19 second snippet of the song can be heard on the New Zealand singer’s website. Lorde promises this song will be much different compared with her earlier work, describing it as a song that will make you want to get up and dance. It’s also described the singer as complex, funny, sad and joyous. Take a listen below and decide how this new song stands up with her breakthrough hits from Pure Heroine, “Royals” and “Team.”:
UPDATE (3/2): According to Pitchfork, Lorde has also announced the release of her sophomore album this summer. There has not been an official release date given yet, but it will be titled Melodrama and will include the song “Green Light.”
