Robert Randolph and the Family Band – Got Soul

Soul All Over

American funk/soul band, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, have been keeping fans waiting a few years for new music, but the release of their fifth studio album, Got Soul, is finally here. Randolph is most well-known for his use of the pedal steel guitar, which is prominent throughout his group’s newest record. Got Soul is jammed packed with energetic and heartfelt tunes.

Soul is what Robert Randolph and the Family Band are known for and title track “Got Soul” is no exception. This upbeat, jazzy song takes its instruments to a new level. Between the guitar and drums, the melody is loud and full of soul. The next song on the album, “She Got Soul,” follows a similar style. It starts off with a gospel-like feel, slow with fun, layered vocals, before entering a catchy chorus and some awesome guitar riffs.

Robert Randolph doesn’t stray too far from his church roots on this album. “Be the Change” is a song about needing help from the Lord to change for the better. Lyrics include, “what we really need to do is love our brothers / we need to love our sisters too / oh my lord.” “Gonna Be All Right” is another track that captures a spiritual feeling with its smooth melody and lyrics pertaining to hope.

Another must-listen is “Love Do What It Do,” featuring former Hootie and the Blowfish lead singer, Darius Rucker, on vocals. This fun song, with its country feel, is sure to be stuck in your head with catchy lyrics such as, “love me like your favorite song / like you love your whiskey strong.”

Got Soul also features instrumental tracks that showcase the music specifically and the talents of the band. Though it lacks lyrics, “Heaven’s Calling,”  has a slower, melody that focuses on the beautiful instrumental vibe. “Travelin’ Cheeba Man” is the more upbeat of the two instrumental tracks, with funky guitar riffs and sharp drums that give the feeling of a fun jam session.

Other songs to check out are “Shake It,” which has a more rock sound with cool vocal harmonies, and “I Thank You,” which features standout singing performance and a sharp melody. Got Soul definitely showcases the many talents of Robert Randolph and the Family Band; their passion and joy for soul music is evident throughout the album.
