It almost doesn’t seem possible that The Cave Singers have been together for ten years now. The band first started as a trio back in 2007, right after Pretty Girls Make Graves fell apart and Derek Fudesco decided to link up with Pete Quirk (of the band Hint Hint) and Marty Lund (of Cobra High) and get a project going in their hometown Seattle. That’s how The Cave Singers first started. They released their debut album called Invitation Songs. And then they signed with Matador Records.
Their sound is indie-folk with a grungy twang. It’s punchy. It’s interesting. And with Quirk’s gritty, smokey voice that sounds like leather and whiskey and sex, it’s what makes these songs unlike any other band you’ve really heard. It’s a sound that continues on their next two albums, Welcome Joy and No Witch (which was released on Jagjaguwar Records). But it isn’t until Naomi from 2013 that you can begin to hear a different energy from the band–one that’s high-spirited and shiny and definitely more pop-rock-infused, as you can hear right from the beginning track called “Canopy.” On this album they also added a bass player to spice up with mix–Morgan Henderson who used to play in the Blood Brothers and Fleet Foxes.
The band’s latest release Banshee was a self-produced album that fans donated 20k to help get made–that’s just how much loyalty comes from their fans. They love the old stuff, but clearly they think the new stuff is pretty all right, too.
