Buffalo Tom (25th Anniversary Show of ‘Let Me Come Over’) @ Bowery Ballroom 5/13

It’s been 25 years since Buffalo Tom’s acclaimed third album Let Me Come Over was released, and now they’re on the road celebrating it (as they perfectly should), playing only three shows in the US (New York, Boston, Maine) before hitting Europe. The band will play two sets–the first being their anniversary record in total, and then a mix from the rest of their albums.

When Let Me Come Over was released the Boston-based trio already had two records out, which were gritty and super garage-like alternative sounding. But with the release of that third album that’s when the band’s sound really came together, especially with songs like “Taillights Fade” and “Mineral” and “Frozen Lake”–songs that were quintessentially 90’s alternative-grunge. It was a sound that only got better with their 1993 release Big Red Letter Day and popular tracks like “Sodajerk” and “Late at Night” that were featured on the TV show My So-Called Life.

Bill Janovitz, Chris Colbourn, Tom Maginnis first met in college in the 80s, springing into the music scene like other local bands Dinosaur Jr. and the Pixies, and naming their band after the classic rock band Buffalo Springfield. The band continued to make music over the years, with their latest record released back in 2011 called Skins–an album that’s right on target with the band’s scruffy rock sound from the 90s, especially with the softer tracks like “Paper Knife” and “The Hawks & The Sparrows”–proving that for this band, yep, they still got it.
