For the first time since the band performed in Orlando way back in October of 2006, Sonny Moore – better known as EDM superstar Skrillex – joined From First to Last on stage. The performance took place at Emo Night in Los Angeles, hosted at The Echo and Echoplex (this performance in the latter of the twin venues).
The emocore act performed one of the stand-out tracks from their 2004 debut Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Bodycount, “The One Armed Boxer vs. The Flying Guillotine.” The songadds a dash of straightforward pop sensibility to the chaotic framework of a Blood Brothers tune – in a world which emo and post-hardcore has largely faded, can it be that From First To Last actually sounds refreshing? The band is incredibly sharp, and while it’s obvious that Moore has not been fronting a rock band for a great while, he plays the part of an emotional frontman just like it was the mid-oughts.
Moore left the band in 2007 due to a number of reasons and soared into the spotlight as Skrillex, and the rest is pop music history. He has helped define a new wave of EDM in a short period of time, and can count many of the music world’s most prestigious producers and artists as his allies. Meanwhile, guitarist Matt Good filled in on lead vocals for From First to Last before the band took a short hiatus from 2010-2013. In the meantime, the band brought on a new vocalist, Spencer Sotelo, who recorded Dead Trees with the band and released the LP in 2015.
From First to Last recently released a new song featuring Moore on vocals, called “Make War.”
