Thursday @ Irving Plaza 4/30

It’s something that all post-hardcore music fans can collectively say: it’s been awhile, Thursday. It’s been four years since the band from New Brunswick, New Jersey have been a thing, but they’ve rediscovered the soul they seemed to have lost over the years since being together since 1997, first breaking into the scene and playing music with the likes of Saves the Day, Poison the Well and Midtown.

Their second studio album Full Collapse and their single “Understanding in a Car Crash” is what essentially brought Thursday to the forefront of emo-hardcore, which then led them to touring with AFI and Coheed and Cambria, headlining Taste of Chaos, and signing with major labels. Their music is fearless, but it’s well-executed. You can go nuts to it when such songs call for that. But then on songs like “This Song Brought to You by a Falling Bomb” off their album War All the Time shows fans that they have no problem embracing their emotional side, too. They’re versatile. And they aren’t scared to keep changing up their sound, as you can hear on No Devolución from 2011–their sixth album that’s a powerful Thursday, recorded intuitively with an alternative flush, and not only has surprised the band with just how far and different their music can go, but their fans, as well.

For Thursday to be back together again (even after Geoff Rickly’s side projects along the way) the band is only better now having let time do its thing, reminding fans once again just how much this band has been missed.
