It sounds like there are way more members in Diet Cig than just a singer/guitarist (Alex Luciano) and a drummer (Noah Bowman)–due to their electric sound that pops from every track. Their songs are energetic pop-punk, but Luciano’s voice is sheer and cooling (even though super raw and passionate), which is evident from the very start of their first EP released in 2014 called Over Easy.
The duo met at a house party upstate and have been writing and releasing songs ever since. Luciano’s songwriting is poetic with a youthful angst (even though new to playing music) and their overall sound is rugged and raw–very DIY-sounding in an endearing way. Their songs have that best-when-live energy, as well, which is something the band takes seriously, delivering a hard punk performance, which seems like an easy thing to do when performing songs like “Pool Boyz” and “Breathless” with straightforward lyrics like “And will you still watch the Simpsons on my floor, pretend it’s 1994? DVDs weren’t out yet so please ignore my box set.” Prepare to dance and sweat a lot.
So, what’s next for Diet Cig? Playing shows, having fun, always remembering their New Paltz scene, and continuing to stretch their sound in the indie-pop-punk world. They’ve also just released a single called “Tummy Ache” which is from their new album Swear I’m Good at This, due out on Frenchkiss Records in April.
