Minus the Bear @ Music Hall of Williamsburg 3/29

Voids is the name of Minus the Bear’s latest release on Suicide Squeeze Records, which for fans has been long-awaited, considering it’s been five years since their last record, Infinity Overhead. But the band is back. They’ve grown older. They’ve changed their lineup. They’ve infused their sound with a different energy than the band’s first few albums. It’s reimagined, in a way. And off their new single “Invisible” you can hear those changes. Producer Sam Bell (Weezer, Bloc Party, Two Door Cinema Club) helped to push Minus the Bear into new territory.

When you listen to the early discography of Minus the Bear you will hear a fast-paced indie-rock that varies from being experimental with flashes of electronic, while other songs are laced with a bit of punk. Songs like “Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse” and “You Kill Bugs Good, Man” off their sophomore album Highly Refined Pirates exemplifies that early energy, but it never really fizzles out, the layers of their music. You can also see the height of their creativity in their chosen song titles like “Pantsuit…Uggghhh” and “Hey! Is That a Ninja Up There?”

Minus the Bear also has a remix album Interpretaciones Del Oso from 2007 and also swiveled in their softer side on Acoustics and Acoustic II–a super rich display of the band’s musical capabilities that really highlights Jake Snider’s leveled, calming vocals. Their latest album will be released in early March, right before their tour hits NYC.
