Andy Shauf @ Music Hall of Williamsburg 5/17

Andy Shauf likes to play alone–that’s just how it is. But playing music in a collaborative fashion isn’t a necessity for this Canadian singer-songwriter–playing music his way is, though. Darker Days is the name of his first album released in 2009, highlighting tracks with the utmost honesty as heard in “You Remind Me Of” as he sings “You remind me of everything I love. Yeah, you remind me of everything I love. The straw underneath this blanket and the stars that catch your eyes and the moment where you are closer by my side.”

Andy Shauf’s sound is simple and poetic, tender, honest. It continues throughout every album, including The Bearer of Bad News which was released after a five-year hiatus from his sophomore album. His songs are deep and heartfelt, will resonate with your heart and make you feel powerful things. His most recent album, The Party, is a conceptual record, describing the night of a party, from the very beginning to the very end–of course while maintaining a super mellow, introspective storytelling point of view. But there’s an energy to his songs, as well, primarily in the middle of his album–otherwise it begins and ends with a very serene tone as you can hear on the bookend tracks “The Magician” and “Martha Sways.”

In the past Shauf has opened for bands like Wilco, case/lang/viers, and The Lumineers on their tour of Europe–proving his magnitude in the scene for lovely, honest, singer-songwriting.
