The psychedelic/experiemental/rock opera group formed in 1983 with only two remaining founding members left today – lead singer Wayne Coyne and bassist Michael Irvins. They are known for their sensory overloading live shows and unusual song/album titles – like Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia) and Supermoon Made Me Want To Pee. The band is slightly more successful in Europe; their most recognizable and successful song in the US being their 2002 hit Do You Realize?? But to really know The Flaming Lips is to see them perform.
The Oklahoma City-based rock band has been putting on elaborate live shows for decades. The entire show is a trip – whether it’s the excessive bursts of confetti cannons or Coyne’s ramblings on aliens, drugs and the collective unconscious – the show is definitely an out-of-this-world experience.
Lead singer Wayne Coyne is known as “The Man in the Bubble”; a name given to him as he frequently glides over the crowd in a plastic bubble. Psychedelic characters like frogs, mushrooms, rainbows, stars, robots, and bears, portrayed by dancers and the band members themselves, fill the stage along with trippy visuals portrayed on a screen behind the performers. Oh yeah, and the music is pretty amazing too.
The Flaming Lips’ tour makes a stop in Chicago April 17th and it’s almost guaranteed to be one of the best concerts you’ll ever experience. Also, their 16th album, Oczy Mlody was released today which happens to be Coyne’s 56th birthday! Happy birthday, dude! Maybe that’s our queue to just chill out today…
