It’s bands like Modern Baseball that remind you why you fell in love with pop-punk to begin with, even if it’s on the revival side of the genre. Their sound is blunt and catchy. Their lyrics are simple and honest and full of innocent angst.
Inspired by bands like Say Anything and the Gaslight Anthem, friends Jacob Ewald and Brendan Lukens decided to take that inspiration and mix it up with the vivid music scene in Philly where the guys were studying in college, and decided to start a band. Sean Huber and Ian Farmer soon joined, and then the band released their first album Sports in 2012, soon followed by You’re Gonna Miss It All, which ended up being one of the most successful releases for Run for Covers Records.
Modern Baseball has already toured with some pretty big acts like Brand New and the Front Bottoms–their sound resonating with veteran fans, as well as the new generation of emo punk-rockers that you can hear in the lyrics of “Fine, Great” when they sing “And I know that you just adore starting off with me, that way that there’s no way that I’ll assume that you’re wasting all of my time to vent about your problems, like how your Instagram stopped working.” The name of their latest record Holy Ghost is a more polished punk compared to their earlier work, and it’s definitely more mature as it bridges the gap between college and real-life adulthood, but it’s still energetic and cool. It’s still very Modern Baseball.
