Scott Kannberg’s Spiral Stairs has announced a new album to be release in March 2017, titled Doris and the Daggers. The follow-up to 2009’s The Real Feel; the delay is owed in part to the time commitment involved with the Pavement reunion that occurred shortly after its release. The album will be released on March 24, 2017 on Nine Mile Records.
After the Pavement tour, life simply took hold and years passed before Kannberg was able to write and record a follow-up. The initial plans to record the album quickly in Seattle were changed when he learned of the passing of his friend and Preston School of Ministry bandmate Darius Minwalla had died in his sleep. After heading to San Francisco and spending time with Kelley Stoltz, where the two exchanged ideas, effectively changing the makeup of the album, Kannberg was ready to record.
Back in his current hometown of Los Angeles, specifically, Eagle Rock, he was joined by Justin Peroff of Broken Social Scene on drums and Matt Harris on bass. The trio were able to record an incredible 30 songs during the sessions. Peroff’s BSS bandleader Kevin Drew appears on “Emoshuns,” fitting in swimmingly with the liquid guitar lines, breezy pop melodies and of course, hand-claps. Stoltz makes an appearance by playing guitar on the semi-unplugged “AWM.” Perhaps the biggest star to appear on the album is Matt Berninger of The National, who lends his trademark delivery to “Exiled Tonight” – a song written by Kannberg with his friend Berninger specifically in mind.
The band released the first video from the album today too, check out “Dance (Cry Wolf)” which stars Grandaddy leader Jason Lytle.
