Three things come to mind when listening to Jacuzzi Boys’ most recent album Ping Pong: the seaside, groove, and of course, rock ‘n’ roll. The Miami trio’s brand new album is a funky yet laid-back assemblage of 12 delightfully crafted songs that range from quick, catchy hits that go on for about just under two minutes to lengthy gems that last a tad over six minutes in length. With song titles like “Boys Like Blood,” “Tip of my Tongue/Edge of my Brain” and “Lucky Blade,” a brief peek at just the album itself discloses that you are in for an eccentric treat. Ping Pong is pretty much tantamount to a sweet afternoon on the Florida coast with nothing but crimson skies in your view and a cold one (or two) in your hand.
Cultivated in 2007, Jacuzzi Boys have been gaining tons of attention with each year due to their addictive psychedelic creations and energetic live shows that give attendees no other option but to jump around and dance and their distinct Floridian, beachy sound. With several EPs and now five LPs, Jacuzzi Boys have managed to preserve their mellow, funky rock aesthetic throughout all of their productions so nicely while becoming more authentic with each release.
With that being said, it is no wonder the ever-so-gifted Iggy Pop has bestowed Jacuzzi Boys with his approval. Ping Pong is a blissful compilation of bangers that are abundant with echoing, sometimes fuzzy vocals and enthusiastic, absurd lyrics such as “A nosy neighbor is in my house, she wants my toothbrush right in her mouth… she’s got toothpaste all on her head, she thinks she’s alive but she is dead,” in their track “Strange Exchange.” That, along with heavy, fast-paced drums that are consistent throughout each song and their killer, somewhat distorted guitar riffs make Ping Pong a dreamy and whimsical album perfect for any sunny day.
