The KLF, also known as The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, have given hints to a possible comeback with a recent poster posted.
The KLF started out in 1987 with Bill Drummond, also known as King Boy D, and Jimmy Cauty, also known as Rockman Rock, under the name The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu named after the fictional conspiratorial group “The Justified Ancients of Mummu” from The Illuminatus! Trilogy. Its been 23 year since the band broke up in 1992, with a couple of reunions in 1995 and 1997.
Throughout the band’s journey, their names have changed based on the project they were working on. In 1988, the duo changed their name to The Timelords as Drummond was also known as Time Boy and Cauty was also known as Lord Rock. This was because of a single that was released called “Doctorin’ the Tardis”, which was a mashup of the Doctor Who theme song, “Block Bluster!” by Sweet and “Rock and Roll (Part Two)” by Gary Glitter. Around March 1988, the band became The KLF with the release of “Burn the Bastards”/”Burn the Beat”.
According to SPIN, on New Years Day, the duo also posted a video of “KLF night” in a club in Bristol, England, which had given some hint of a possible return. But a recent poster clarified this action more by saying “The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu are currently at work in their light industrial unit. This work will not be public until the 23rd of August 2017.”
The number 23 has been adding a lot of significance to the band as in the poster it also says “It is almost 23 years since The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu announced a self imposed and self important 23 moratorium. The reasons for the moratorium have now been lost in time, space and a rusting shipping container somewhere near Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station. ”
As the words continue, the duo has stated that they have nothing to do with any media posted about them in the last 23 years, such as the video posted on New Years Day, as Bill Drummond, according to NME, has made a statement saying “I’m aware of a film that has been edited out of old bits of stuff and has been put up on Vimeo and Youtube, but it has nothing to do with us. We do understand that there are two documentaries being made about The KLF – both of these are nothing to do with us. Jimmy Cauty and I have always remained very close but we have no plans to reform The KLF or exploit our back catalogue in any way.”
