Penny and Sparrow @ Rough Trade 4/30

The band Penny & Sparrow is known for their melodic acoustics and heartfelt lyrics about love and life, which is flat honest from the start of their musical career and continues well into their latest album release, Let a Lover Drown You. Produced by John Paul White (of The Civil Wars) and Ben Tanner (of Alabama Shakes) the album is a collection of songs that are slow, beautiful, and totally sad-romantic. The song “Bed Down” is a must-listen from this album: “I know you never gave a damn about me. I know your body, only peeling all the paint. I won’t bend down with such a hate. Well, at least, at least not anymore.”

Bandmates Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke met back in Austin when they were roommates at college there, and after writing and recording music that initially began as a hobby for them both, ended up turning into something much more serious that neither musician could seem to live without.

Penny & Sparrow’s first two albums Tenboom and Struggle Party are just as emotionally honest as their latest release, especially on tracks like “Heroes and Monsters,” “The Literal Heart” and “Stoic.” The way the duo’s voices mirror each other and lure you into their captivating honesty, it’s an experience that’s even better when seen live on stage. They’ve even released an eleven-track Christmas album, an indie-folkish spin on many of the best classics–another charming showcase of the band’s acoustic sound.
