It’s kind of really tricky trying to explain what kind of music The Werks play exactly. Starting with their album Synapse from 2009 you’ll find that most of their songs are heavily instrumental–infused with an energetic electric guitar and a pounding piano that’s very 70s psychedelic-like, which you can hear on songs like “For Today” and “Unfinished Business.” But that’s not where their music rests. Incorporated into that you’ll hear alternative rock, elements of jam-band styles and dance, as well–fusing their sound into a medley of genres, which is what makes The Werks such a versatile band.
Hailing from Dayton, Ohio the band first met a local music contest, quickly found their niche in the jam-band scene, and also found themselves just behind Phish on the music charts in 2011. Their sound definitely matured by Mr. Smalls Sessions when it was released in 2014–vocals embracing a more vintagy feel, but still maintaining that original, vibrant pulse, as heard on “Moetry in Potion” and “Fat Man.”
One thing that The Werks is known for by their fans is their commitment to performing a highly memorable show, feeding off the vibe of the audience and then giving that back to them on stage. They also have created The Werk Out Music and Arts Festival, which celebrates music of different genres in the Midwest.
