Piñata Protest is an obscure, San Antonio based punk band, that embrace the sounds of traditional Mexican music, while still maintaining a raw punk rock aesthetic. The upbeat tempos and accordion that fuel classic ranchero music is expertly combined in Piñata Protest’s tracks–mixing English and Spanish language lyrics in the process.
Piñata Protest formed in 2006 by accordionist/singer Alvaro Del Norte, and features Jose Morales (guitar), Richie Brown (bass), and Chris-Ruptive (drums). They went on to release their debut EP, Plethora, in 2010. Over the course of ten years, Piñata Protest have made waves in the local music scene of San Antonio, and have also been nationally recognized for their eclectic style. NPR Music expressed their love of the band, highly praising their 2013 album, El Valiente. The group has toured extensively, being featured at SXSW, Día De Los Toadies, as well as last year’s inaugural Sound On Sound fest in McDade, Texas. Piñata Protest is currently touring with The Casualties in support of the Mexican death metal band, Brujeria.
Piñata Protest is the type of band that needs to be heard and seen live to truly understand their unique style. Catch the band this month at Grizzly Hall on the 19th.
