Beach Goth band The Growlers are making their way into the bay this winter. They will be hitting up the Warfield in March as they embark on their City Club Spring tour.
Known for their annual Beach Goth festival, this band is making some serious waves with their surf rock sound. The band recently dropped their fifth album City Club last year, which is known for their hits I’ll Be Around and Night Ride. Previous to that, the band’s resume is full of popular songs such as Going Gets Tough and (a personal favorite) Big Toe from their 2014 album Chinese Fortune. Then, from their 2013 album, Hung At Heart, has the singles One Million Lovers and Someday which are good picks to listen to. Most of their songs have hit well over a million plays on Spotify. All of the listed songs have been sitting on my current playlist because they just have good vibes and fun sounds to get me through the gloomy weather. The Growler’s sound is reminiscent of 1960s surf/folk rock. Their sound invokes the imagery of sitting on the beach and watching the waves crash into the tide; it’s easy listening and easy to catch yourself singing along to. Their sound is warm; they make their indie sound just enigmatic enough to keep you dancing to the sweet vocals of Brooks Nielsen combined with the sick keyboard skills of Kyle Straka.
Fans of Black Lips, Foster the People, and Cage the Elephant will be down for this show. Those who are into the older psychedelic rock of the 60s should also check this band and show out; they are similar to the sound of The Grateful Dead and The Doors with a little more edge. Catch them as they roll through the city and keep an ear out for their traditional romantic lyrics of their familiar California lifestyle.
