In a recent piece by Entertainment Weekly previewing 2017’s most anticipated albums, indie rock heroes Spoon confirmed they have recorded and will be releasing a new album next year. The band recorded once again with Dave Fridman, who was behind their last record, 2014’s acclaimed They Want My Soul. Daniel is quoted as saying “I love working with Dave because he makes a point to fuck things up,” and “I feel like we are onto something – we are covering new ground.”

Additionally, in a piece from Billboard it was confirmed that the record will be released in March of 2017 and will mark the band’s return to Matador Records. That seminal label released the first Spoon LP Telephono and their EP Soft Effects, both of which have a much noisier quality that would be unrecognizable to latter-era fans of the band. The band broke through into the indie spotlight with a decade-long series of albums released on Merge Records, beginning with Girls Can Tell in 2001 and concluding with Transference in 2010

The fact that Spoon has been working on a big announcement will not come as a shock to those paying close attention to the band’s social media profiles. Last week the group posted a mysterious image (that is suspiciously shares dimensions with the typical album cover), hinting at some sort of news.

Then, the band’s song “I Ain’t The One” was featured during the show Shameless, and though a full version of the song popped up on the web, it was promptly removed.

The band did perform the song recently at a live show in Mexico, check out the video below:

So far, Spoon is scheduled for one live appearance at Mad Cool Festival in Spain. Expect many more dates to be announced once the album’s release date, title and details emerge.
