Yasiin Bey is best known by his stage name Mos Def and recently announced the final tour dates in 2017 he will be performing before he officially retires. However before he hits the golf course, Bey has three new albums on the way. The first album of the trio was originally slated to drop on December 9th and has finally been released under the title December 99th.
December 99th was released under Bey and producer Ferrari Sheppard as a collaborative project and much of the LP was recorded in South Africa where Bey had been having an extended stay after being unable to leave the country. The tone of the album seems to reflect the tough times Bey had been going through following his arrest in the country. Bey had been using a “world passport,” issued by the World Service Authority, a pro-freedom movement that, unfortunately for Bey, few nations recognize as a passport grantor. In November 2016, he was granted the ability to leave but not reenter South Africa and was put on South Africa’s “undesirable persons” list.
Tidal subscribers can stream December 99th while non-subscribers can listen to new song “Blade in the Pocket.” The record was produced entirely by Sheppard and includes three tracks that were previously released: “Local Time,” “NAW,” and “Seaside Panic Room.” There are 10 tracks total on the LP.
In addition to December 99th being released today: the final two albums Bey is expected to release before retiring Negus In Natural Person and As Promised are being debuted live at The Apollo tonight. On Thursday there will be a second show at The Apollo that will be streamed live on TIDAL.
