MC Lars @ Bottom of the Hill 3/24

Bay grown rapper MC Lars is rolling into the city this winter at Bottom of the Hill on March 24th. His tour, MC Lars and the Mega Ran Experience Tour, will feature artists Mega Ran and Big O.

MC Lars’ style is unique because he layers his raps over traditional punk beats via his laptop. He calls his musical genre “post-punk laptop rap”. One thing that makes MC Lars’ lyrics so fantastic and unique are that many of them are Shakespeare and literary inspired. The song Hey There Ophelia, is literally a song about Hamlet and the craziness surrounding the entire play. The song Rapbeth is about the Weird Sisters from Macbeth, which mixes the famous lines “double, double toil and trouble” with a sick hip hop beat. It makes the literature nerd in me geek out over the fast rhymes being played against a punk beat. The lyrics are quirky and have spot on insight to some of my favorite Shakespeare plays. He has other literary inspired songs like Flow Like Poe, Mr. Raven, and Ahab. MC Lars’ has even done a Ted Talks entitled The Hip-Hop of Shakespeare explaining the connection between rapping and Shakespeare.

Most recently MC Lars came out with Donald Trump Has Really Bad Morals in 2016, which came out with the songs Mad Men (yes, inspired by the hit show!) and Gary the Green-Nosed Reindeer. Those who are fans of “Weird Al” Yankovic, Watsky, and Beefy are going to be into MC Lars. MC Lars has been around for the last decade putting out pop culture inspired songs that are funny and really fun to listen to. His songs are different, but hold onto their punk/rap roots that still make for innovative beats. So, hey, come on out to the city to watch this modern day Shakespeare rapper. He’s innovative, literary inspired, and just plain cool.
